1. Make a fist

To start making a fist, start by curling your fingertips into the palm of your hand, bending and dropping your thumb on top of your index and middle fingers, making sure the fist stays securely closed without coming undone (this reduces the risk of finger injuries), while not being too tight so as not to block blood flow to hands.

2. Adjust the lower body posture

Boxing requires that the lower body play an essential role and can help strengthen your punches. Your dominant foot should be behind you while your non-dominant one should be in front. Your body should face forward in an equidistant fashion from both feet; feet should never touch each other as this makes moving around difficult and is best avoided as this limits movement of body parts. Knee bends are important as well to maintain stability, balance, and defense from attacks from opponents as well as providing upper body strength.

3. Adjust your upper body posture

Your upper body posture depends on which punch style you select, such as jabbing. In order to safely protect your face, your hands must be raised high above your chest with elbows tight against ribs for the jab punch.

Here are a few basic boxing techniques:


Jab is the safest way to throw a punch, making it increasingly popular in competition. This style requires raising both hands high with elbows close to your sides in a jab stance; keeping your upper body compact, slightly adjusting it while remaining compact as possible for throwing quick punches; taking one or more small steps forward with non-dominant foot (4-12 inches or 8-2 inches depending on desired closeness) then quickly pull hands back after throwing punches to protect the face with a fist if required – then quickly withdraw and return your fist back after throwing punches as soon as possible for the protection of face by fist if needed.


The cross is one of the primary punches used in boxing and is sometimes known as the straight right. To use this style against jabs, one foot must be in front of you while using one arm to throw a punch while using your other hand for protection and using the back foot as drive/control to turn in a certain direction. Upon mastering both attacks you may combine both for even more practice!


Hook requires using both hands to execute, not just one powerhouse hand. Whether thrown from the front or back hand, your arm and shoulder should be at equal height while the forearm is perpendicular to it; feet must rotate so the body follows the punch line when throwing a punch; when throwing the hook make sure the upper body follows punch and protect the face as you reset.
